Sombr is addressing online claims that family connections played a role in his rise as an artist. In a recent interview, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter, whose real name is Shane Boose, said the nepo baby label does not reflect how his career developed.
During the conversation, Sombr explained that his parents have spent much of their professional lives working in fields connected to HIV/AIDS rather than the music industry. He said their careers did not provide the kind of industry access suggested by the criticism.
Sombr studied opera at New York’s LaGuardia High School before beginning to build an audience with his own music. His song Caroline helped generate early attention and was followed by a record deal with Warner Records.
His profile grew significantly with Back to Friends, which became his first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album, I Barely Know Her, also reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200.
As his visibility has increased, Sombr has continued to emphasize that his progress came through his songwriting, releases, and growing audience rather than family influence.
